The Art of Wellness
The idea of “wellness” does not solely refer to a physical state of well-being, but also to a state of spiritual well-being, which can often be achieved through self-expression. One of the best methods of self-expression is through art. “Expressive art is a tool to explore, develop and practice creativity as a means to wellness” (Wellarts Association). Alchemy by Dark Heart recently teamed up with Puff, Pass, & Paint to bring together two groups that believe in the importance of using creativity to generate balance in life.
Heidi Keyes is the founder of Puff, Pass & Paint, the first legal cannabis-friendly art class, which started in Denver and has expanded to Portland, Washington DC, Las Vegas, San Francisco, and Oakland. She and Michael Eymer, founder of Colorado Cannabis Tours, joined forces through the industry in 2015, and together are expanding their classes, tours, and other cannabis-friendly events and activities to other legal states through parent company CannabisTours.com.
PUFF, PASS & PAINT…
Heidi has a degree in Fine Arts from Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and was working as an artist prior to founding Puff, Pass & Paint in January of 2014. Upon legalization in Colorado, Heidi started her classes because she was inspired and encouraged by the combination of cannabis and art, and how it encourages art for people who want to be creative, but just aren’t sure where to start. She very quickly realized that her classes had a draw for cannabis consumers of all kinds– college students, couples, friends, singles, business associates, grandparents, bachelor and bachelorette parties, families– anyone over the age of 21+ can and does attend her classes. With every new location, Puff, Pass & Paint takes inspiration from the cities it holds classes in, offering cannabis users around the country a chance to meet other consumers, laugh, chat, make friends… and puff and pass while painting and making art. “Arts and culture make considerable and necessary contributions to the well-being of communities. Arts and culture are powerful tools with which to engage communities in various levels of change” (Creative City Network of Canada).
One of the many beauties of cannabis is how it provides a common ground and brings together people of all ages, backgrounds, and cultures. The act of passing a joint, a bowl, or a vaporizer is very communal and encourages conversation, the building of friendships, the breaking of barriers, and the normalization of a plant that has both medical and recreational benefits. Puff, Pass & Paint teamed up with Alchemy vaporizers in the Bay Area in January of 2017, as a collaborative effort to bring more options to consumers and introduce new faces to cannabis consumption in a newly recreationally legal state. The crowd favorite for these classes is aptly named “Inspire”, and helps students feel open-minded and creative as they enjoy making art.
Puff, Pass & Paint and CannabisTours.com is extremely passionate about cannabis education, encouraging normalization, and the advancement of legalization throughout the country, and working with companies like Alchemy who also share these same goals and standards. They look forward to expanding to even more cities, as additional states recognize the benefits of this amazing plant and legalize cannabis recreationally.
